Rajasthan Ajmer by-election 2018: The battle for Ajmer was a prestige battle for the Congress as the seat was once represented by the party state unit chief Sachin Pilot. The party state chief, who represented the seat in the Lok Sabha from 2009 to 2014, campaigned aggressively for the seat.
Raghu Sharma, the Congress candidate for the Ajmer by-elections, has lived up to the expectations of the Congress, winning the seat by defeating Ramswaroop Lamba, Sanwarlal Jat’s son. The bypolls in Ajmer were necessitated by the death of sitting BJP MP Sanwarlal Jat in August 2017. Raghu Sharma had been an MLA from Kekari assembly constituency from 2008-2013. He has fought election from Jaipur parliamentary constituency also. Sharma, a former MLA, has served as a chief whip in the Rajasthan state assembly. A Chief Whip of Rajasthan Congress, his job was to ensure that other members of the political party attend and vote as the party desires.
After Raghu Sharma won the Ajmer seat, the Congress expressed its delight on its official Twitter handle, saying, “Congratulations to Dr. Raghu Sharma & @INCRajasthan for winning the #Ajmer Lok Sabha #Bypolls.”
The by-elections have brought cheer among the Congress party cadres with the party performing exceptionally well on all the three seat while the by-election results are no less than an alarming bell for the incumbent BJP ahead of the state assembly polls scheduled to be held later this year. Congress party president Rahul Gandhi, in a tweet, slammed the incumbent BJP saying that the state of Rajasthan has completely rejected the saffron party.
The polling for the Ajmer by-election was held on Monday (January 29).
